I Get Plants and Flowers From Funeral Homes

I will stop by funeral homes in my area and get free plants and flowers that have been thrown away. It's customary for those attending a funeral to bring flowers, wreaths or plants to a funeral. If the people who were in charge of the funeral don't want to take everything home, the funeral home just throws them away in their dumpster bin. I go into the dumpster and can get a lot of great plants and flowers for free. Sometimes they are worth hundreds of dollars.

I always have fresh flowers in my house, and my house and garden are full of plants I have rescued from the funeral dumpsters. The ones I can't use, or when I get too many, I give them away.

    It's funny that you say they throw them away. I have always heard the tradition is if the family doesn't want to take them home, the funeral home people usually take them to a nursing home or hospital and give them to folks who don't have any flowers.

    How about jewelry from the grave -- by same logic as hotel breakfasts, no one will miss it, you'll just be saving it from going to waste. Also, some old folks have gold crowns... they don't need them anymore either. The list can go on.

    I have heard they throw them away also. Nothing wrong with taking something that would have been thrown away otherwise. He did say he got them out of the dumpster.

    @crazyliblady I'm not sure why this should be funny. I assume that different funeral homes have different policies. The ones in my area throw away the flowers.

    I think that policies probably vary from place to place -- if the flowers are coming out of the dumpster, then to my thinking it really shouldn't lead to any problems! Some people might want some insurance that the flowers in their residence weren't coming from the funeral home, but hey, if it doesn't bother you...

    I'm actually surprised that you would waste the gas money to drive somewhere to pick us something like flowers. Doesn't seem very frugal to me at all...
